Lixxus Ltd – Rollout of UK Wireless Hotspots
Lixxus were asked to provide Swisscom with an end to end bespoke, turnkey, fully-managed broadband solution to provide high availability connectivity to their network of Wireless Hotspots within the UK and Ireland. In addition Lixxus were tasked with providing connectivity for events and conferences.
Background and Solution
Lixxus proposed a single fully-managed solution using Cisco equipment connected to the resilient Lixxus backbone, delivered over various technologies including ADSL, SDSL, bonded SDSL and Fibre (Leased Lines). The whole network would be pro-actively monitored 24/7 to provide the customer with an early warning system co-ordinated via the Lixxus Network Operations Centre.
To guarantee uptime Lixxus took control of everything up to and including the LAN port. With this in mind Lixxus carried out a coordinated and project managed engineering phase to remove old network connections and install PSTN, broadband, routers and remote access modems at each site. Each site was then photographed, documented and then all relevant information was uploaded into the Swisscom internal system.

David Hill Sales Director For UK & Ireland for Swisscom Hospitality said:
" Lixxus were chosen because of their ability to adapt to our high standards and requirements. The European value for all sites is in excess of £10million, so we required a provider who could ensure uptime and to react quickly and efficiently to fix any problems. The rollout was not without its challenges but Lixxus worked with us to overcome them. With over 500 sites and over 5000 access points Lixxus had many challenging logistical issues to deliver the same level of service nationwide. We were particularly concerned about the level of interaction with our end clients but with careful project management Lixxus were able to co-ordinate all parties involved. Lixxus have provided a very reliable and resilient service, and as such we are now working closely with Lixxus on phase 2 of the project."
James Kershaw, Operations Director for Lixxus said;
"It was important that we didn’t over commit or under deliver. Any project of this size requires immense attention to detail from the initial planning right through to the final client handover. Our company ethos has always been to offer our customers complete peace of mind by ensuring we take as much ownership as possible. To this end we worked closely with Swisscom to ensure that we understood the project objectives, that those objectives were met through deployment of the most appropriate technologies and the most appropriate management wrap."
